Accelerated Master’s Degree at the University of Michigan - Program in Transcultural Studies - Information Session: Monday, October 12, 1-3 p.m., Remote

Earn your MA in one additional year!

Join us to learn more about Transcultural Studies, an interdisciplinary accelerated master's degree program designed to enable current undergraduate students in LSA to earn their MA degree with one additional year of study beyond their bachelor’s degree.

The fall application cycle is open to current LSA juniors and seniors.
Fall term applications are due November 1, 2026.

Do you anticipate pursuing a PhD or a career involving international travel, cross-cultural partnerships, or collaborative work in a diverse workplace? The University of Michigan's accelerated MA program in Transcultural Studies can help you develop the historical, theoretical, and practical knowledge you need to navigate forward-looking graduate education and career pathways in an increasingly cosmopolitan and interconnected world. Transcultural Studies uses approaches from across the Humanities and Social Sciences to foster a critical and historically informed understanding of human communication and interaction across perceived boundaries of culture, nationality, race, and religious identity.

This interdisciplinary program is intended to provide both advanced training and a capstone experience for current LSA undergraduates who anticipate pursuing a PhD or working in business or non-profit contexts where intercultural competency and a critical framework for thinking systematically about connections, comparisons, and translations among human communities will be desirable skills.

Mozart's "Requiem": Friday, November 13, 7:30 p.m., Hill Auditorium

While Mozart is not primarily known for sacred music, his final composition — the "Requiem Mass" — stands among his most sublime achievements.

Left unfinished at his death at age 35 and immortalized in the film Amadeus, the work was commissioned anonymously by a mysterious benefactor and was ultimately completed by Mozart’s student, Franz Xaver Süssmayr, from his sketches. As Mozart’s health declined, he is said to have believed he was composing the "Requiem" not for another, but for himself, a notion that deepens the work’s haunting resonance. Blending fear and hope with extraordinary emotional depth, the Requiem has captivated listeners for centuries.

This performance marks the UMS Choral Union’s first return to the piece in 80 years, in collaboration with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra and its music director, Earl Lee. The program opens with Johannes Brahms’s rarely performed Alto Rhapsody, a striking work for alto, male chorus, and orchestra.

Academic Year in Freiburg 2027-2028: Tuesday, December 1 (Early Application Deadline)

The best way to get to know Germany really well is to live there for an extended time.

By studying in Freiburg for a year, you can practically earn all credits required for a German major and may possibly get distribution credits and credits towards a second major; and you will live in one of the most attractive and desired places in Germany. This program is open to all University of Michigan undergraduate students.

Eligibility:
* Minimum 3.0 GPA
* Good academic standing
* Sophomore, Junior, or Senior standing by Fall 2027
* Completion of German 232 or equivalent prior to September 2027

Tuition for this year-long program is covered by a program fee (currently $7,950/term), and students receive University of Michigan in-residence credit for the courses they take during the Academic Year in Freiburg. Students will not pay University of Michigan tuition during the year abroad. Additional costs include travel, room, and board. The latter two are considerably cheaper than housing in Ann Arbor is. You will live in a single in a student dorm in Freiburg.

Students remain eligible for financial aid. In addition, the German Department will reduce the program fee for all applicants by up to $1,000 this year. Further funding opportunities are available from the department as well; to inquire, please contact germandept@umich.edu.

For more information, see the AYF website at https://www.ayf.uni-freiburg.de/

You can find out more on Instagram.

Humanities and Social Sciences in Berlin: Monday, March 1 (Application Deadline)

This English-taught IES program examines issues relevant to major cities today, such as architecture, cultural identity, gender and sexual politics, multiculturalism, popular culture, and urban studies. Wherever possible, courses take advantage of the city’s many historical, artistic, and cultural sites. A 4-credit German language course is required for beginning and intermediate students. On-site staff help the students integrate into life in Berlin. Learning is enhanced by an extended course-related trip to Vienna or Warsaw and various day trips to German cities. During free time, tour neighborhoods and visit museums to gain a better understanding of Germany’s complex history and culture.

This is not a competitive program. Students who meet the eligibility requirements are likely to be admitted.

Important Notes:
This program is primarily designed for students without a German Language background who would like to study abroad in Germany. German Majors or Minors should focus their program search on the Academic Year in Freiburg or the Winter Term in Tübingen programs. For questions, please reach out to your CGIS Advisor.

The March 1 deadline is for the entire academic year 2027-2028 and for the Fall 2027 program.
